Newly, the San Dieguito Union High School District announced that they will now be funding to purchase and incorporate compostable lunch materials to all schools within the district. Supplies will include forks, spoons, knives, chilli containers and paper bags for foods such as pizza served in the cafeteria.
Go Greenish has been dedicated towards working on incorporating compostable materials to these schools and are excited for the new collaboration with the district. It is pivotal for the students to have access to these materials as it will have a significant impact on their efforts towards reducing waste at their local schools.
“Studies estimate that up to 50% of a school’s ‘waste’ can be composted,” according to Cornell Center for Materials Management. By incorporating composting, students are able to effectively reduce waste and reuse materials. This process is proven to divert natural resources from landfills, decrease greenhouse gases which are emitted by landfills, and decrease spending by reducing the need for waste hauling.
This step brings about the organization's goals to encourage renewable and sustainable practices within the district.
